This event is hosted by Leipzig/Halle Airport and HELP Logistics (a program of the Kuehne Foundation). This event will include a technical tour, side event and an evening reception.
“Better, safer and more efficient aid” was the stated purpose of the first World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul in April 2016. Aiming to improve humanitarian assistance for nearly 88 million people in need (UN, 2016), the summit was focusing among other on how to better prepare for and respond to crises, and be resilient to shocks; to share best practices which can help save lives around the world, put affected people at the center of humanitarian action, and alleviate suffering” (WHS, 2016).
With numerous actors such as humanitarian agencies, national Governments, donors and commercial companies involved, the humanitarian supply chain is a complex and difficult to manage system. On average 60-80% of humanitarian funding is utilized by the supply chain (Van Wassenhove, 2006). Efficiencies must be found here if the humanitarian community is to effectively meet the ever increasing needs.
This event will outline the major challenges in the humanitarian sector with a focus on logistics and supply chain management. Furthermore, it will discuss the opportunities for enhanced co-ordination among the actors involved to provide an efficient and uninterrupted delivery of relief commodities.
